Focus on Fathering Week 2008
Focus on Fathering Week is all about celebrating fathering, and acknowledging
the essential role men play in growing the city of our future. In 2008
there were fifteen events, ranging from an overnight tramp for fathers and sons;
to a Big Clean up of the stream at Tui Glen; and a talk about fathering
adolescent girls. The NOW bus offered free health checks for men and there was a
display of children's photographs,
of what fathering means to them, held in West City Mall.
The week, coordinated by Promoting Great Parenting,
Violence Free Waitakere and
Waitakere City Council provides an opportunity to hear and tell stories about the joys and opportunities of fathering.
It's about supporting our dads, making sure that they can have good back-up for
when times can get tough. It's about being the best dads possible, for kids
looking for guidance and love, no matter how old they are.
The Focus on Fathering Week Report 2008 can be downloaded here in two parts.
'Part A' is the main body of the report (26 pages) and 'Part B' the Appendices
(41 pages; including the programme, event flyers, advertisements, editorial and
a selection of the children's photographs of dad).

Book on Fathering
Being a father today is challenging. With many factors shaping the way fatherhood is perceived
and the way fathers behave, there is no longer a clear definition of a father's (or mother's) role.
What remains constant is the important role that parents play in the lives of their children.
Focus on Fathering takes an informative and challenging look at fathering and what it means to be a father.
It discusses the fascinating, moving and often contradictory role in which men find themselves as fathers and looks at issues such as:
- What is a good father these days?
- What is it fathers provide that is so influential to a child's development?
- Is fathering importantly different to mothering?
- Is it a role that a single mother or a substitute parent can take?
- What do fathers and children say?
- What do women think?
It is obvious fathers have deep feelings for their children and a natural desire to be good parents.
Practitioners share their research and experiences of working with fathers and explore many aspects of
fathering including the role they play in a child's life, stereotypes, issues and the pressures they face.
The book retails at NZ$44 - if it is not stocked in your local bookshop, phone Opus Textbooks Ltd (09) 410 8955.
