Community Houses

Community Houses are small, locally based, facilities providing recreational and social opportunities, community education and a place to meet for local residents.

The Community Houses are governed by a voluntary Management Committee, who employ a part-time co-ordinator to carry out the day-to-day operations and activities of the House.

The Council has service agreements with six community houses and assists with employment of a co-ordinator and operational costs.

User groups and courses run from the Community Houses include:

  • after school care
  • pre-school activities
  • craft groups
  • school holiday programmes
  • yoga
  • cooking classes
  • learner licences
  • photography
  • english classes
  • water colour classes
  • Mah Jong
  • joggers/walkers
  • gardening group
  • women's groups
  • playgroups
  • parenting courses
  • Whanau meetings
  • diabetes group
  • self defence
  • road code
  • youth alive and many more
