Hazardous Waste

A household hazardous waste drop off facility is provided free of charge at the Refuse Transfer Station for residents of Waitakere City only (proof of residency, i.e. phone bill, rates bill etc, will be required).

Hazardous waste is only accepted in small quantities from residents.

Guidelines on acceptable items are listed below:

  • maximum 8 litres of waste oil
  • 6 paint tins (containing paint)
  • 2 rechargeable batteries
  • 1 tub pool chemicals
  • 3 cans of garden sprays
  • maximum of 5 Ecobulb light bulbs

Note: Quantities larger than those listed above will not be accepted.  For disposal of larger quantities, contact the ARC.

The Refuse and Recycling Transfer Station will not accept  asbestos or any polychlorinated biphenyls (known as PCBs). These are found in the condensers of old fluorescent tube fittings and old electric motors.

For queries relating to asbestos and PCB's, contact the Auckland Regional Council.

Note: Hazardous substances from commercial sources are not accepted at the Refuse Transfer Station. For queries relating to commercial hazardous waste, contact the Auckland Regional Council.
