Community Projects and Volunteers
A conservation group, a church group or a sports team running an activity that engages people with nature anywhere around their city or home. These are all community projects with volunteers - where people and nature benefit.
Introduction
Waitakere is proud to have approximately fifty known volunteer groups operating in the city. Some are community groups who use conservation tasks as a tool toward achieving other objectives (e.g. the sports team), some are neighbours caring for their local environment and some are dedicated conservation groups. Other examples include:
- Neighbours co-ordinating their effort to plant a stream bank that runs through each of their backyards
- School children, scouts, guides etc. learning by doing a planting project in a local park
- A business building their team.
How could your group use the opportunity to benefit?
What environmental benefit could you contribute?
For each project, there are common tasks that need organising. Here are some "tools" and contacts to make your job easier.
See the 'big picture' termed the Green Network that shows some areas of priority.
Obtaining permission of
landowner
Streams, weeds, birds they all go about their businesses regardless of our boundaries. Sometimes the problems they have - or the work needed to restore health to our land, can be overwhelming, beyond our skills, or beyond our boundaries.
Support for or from others around us can provide a solution, and be fun.
If you plan to take a shared approach you need to make sure landowners or other parties share the vision.
