The Japanese garden is located behind the
Civic Centre in
Henderson. The garden is inspired by the traditional viewing gardens that originated in the 15th century, Japan. Viewing gardens tend to promote contemplation when viewed from an
adjoining pavilion.
With these elements the Japanese viewing garden traditionally creates a scenic composition that mimics nature. This means that when you move through a Japanese garden, you not only see with your eyes you listen, feel,
and live its simplicity and beauty.
This garden melds New Zealand natives with exotic and Japanese plants to reflect the partnership between Waitakere City and its Japanese Sister City, Kakogawa.
Cranwell Park
Cranwell is the centre of recreational activities in Henderson with the
Library,
Aquatic Centre, Waitakere Recreation
Centre, croquet and bowling clubs. A pleasant picnic spot among the historical trees
- a link to the park's orcharding past and for the music fans there's a memorial to Elvis. Cranwell Park is the start of the
Henderson Creek Walkway.
Ambrico Reserve and Ambrico Historical Reserve
A small pocket of land in the heart of a new medium density residential development provides linkages to an historic kiln and allows for inclusion of the recreational features to create a neighbourhood park. A playground, brick maze and petanque court alongside shade trees and open grass areas provide a range of features of interest for the local residents.
