Chris Timms Memorial Jetty |
Henderson Creek Jetties
Two new jetties have recently been opened on Council
reserves on Henderson Creek; the Heritage Jetty in Tui Glen
Reserve, and the Chris Timms Memorial Jetty in Henderson Creek
Esplanade Reserve below the Trusts Stadium.
Background
The new jetties were formally opened as part of the
Henderson Creek celebrations held over the weekend of 19/20
November 2005.
The Tui Glen Heritage Jetty replaces the historic jetty that
was once located at Tui Glen Motor Camp. This jetty, in Tui
Glen Reserve, is in the upper reaches of Henderson Creek on
the Oratia Stream, just below Falls Park and across the
stream from Cranwell Park and the
Aquatic Centre.
The Chris Timms Memorial Jetty, is named for
the larger-than-life Olympic gold medal winning yachtsman,
mountaineer and flyer killed in a plane crash last year. The
Chris Timms Memorial Jetty can be accessed from the playing
fields below the Trusts
Stadium.

By car - Turn into Claude Brooks Drive off
Edmonton Road and follow the road through the park towards the Oratia Stream. The jetty is located on the stream
at the north end of the park, near the public toilets.
(Note: this jetty is wheelchair accessible.)
On foot - From Henderson township, walk through
Cranwell Park and across the foot bridge behind the Aquatic
Centre, turn left and follow the Oratia Stream to the Jetty. From Lincoln Road or Te Atatu, follow Henderson
Creek to the Central Park Drive bridge, take
the underpass under the road, and then follow the
walk/cycleway along the east bank of the Creek heading south
(away from the motorway) through Chilcott Brae to Tui Glen
Reserve.

By car - Drive to the Trusts Stadium and enter the
main carpark at Gate 3. Park in the lowest carpark, cross the playing
fields towards the Creek and take the stairs or ramp down to the
jetty.
On foot - From Central Park Drive follow the informal
walkway along the west bank of the Henderson Creek heading
north towards the motorway. Stay on the path along the
bottom of the bank and you will arrive at the jetty.
Kayaking down Henderson Creek
Council is currently negotiating a lease/licence with
Outdoor Discoveries – a kayak hire company, which will
operate a kayak hire concession from the jetty at Tui Glen.
The jetty is a public jetty so anyone can launch a small
boat or kayak there, but kayaks will also be available to
hire on certain days.
