This is the former Waitakere City Council website, which has some of the information and services you need if you live or do business in the area. Go to the main Auckland Council website to access the complete range of council services.
Teens' Services (13 - 18 yrs)
Waitakere Library and Information Services have a specialist Teens’ Services
Librarian stationed in each Waitakere Library branch available to help with
recreational reading and homework enquiries. Our services include:
Assistance with resources for assignments and coursework
During term time after school, there is a Children’s and Teens’s Services
Librarian present in each Waitakere Library branch to provide free homework help
and advice on reading materials. They can also introduce and demonstrate
Waitakere Library and Information Services
eResources.
There is also a selection of suitable research websites recommended for children
and young adults available at the Reference and Research
page.
Any Questions Service
AnyQuestions.co.nz
is a free online service which helps students find useful, accurate online
information for their homework.
It is not a ‘quick answers service’ - instead online librarians are trained to
help students work out the sort of information they need, then begin searching
with them.
Librarians from all over New Zealand are available each week day between 1:00 pm
and 6:00 pm to help students search online. To use
AnyQuestions.co.nz you have
to be attending a New Zealand primary, intermediate, or secondary school or be
home schooled.
AnyQuestions.co.nz also offers
ManyAnswers.co.nz which contains the
answers to many of the most popular questions asked on
AnyQuestions.co.nz.
Reading Advocacy
The Children’s and Teens’ Services Librarians have put together a wide
selection of reading lists for all ages. These range from Books for Boys and
Books for Girls to Excellent Reads for NCEA English. You can find them all on
our Reading Advocacy page.
Manga competitions
Waitakere Library and Information Services are proud to offer an annual
Make a
Manga and Create a Character competition. Both competitions are very popular and we always receive a high
standard of entries. We have some great prizes to be won, including prizes from
comics shop Heroes For Sale. Copies of the 2009 winners and highly commended
entries are available to view in each of the Waitakere Library branches.
Make a Manga and Create a Character launch on 24 May. Visit the
Make a Manga page for more details on the launch event.
Books in the Wild
Books in the Wild is an exciting reading programme made especially for Waitakere
City’s teenagers by Waitakere Library and Information Services.
Here’s how it works:
Loads of books are released throughout Waitakere high schools during a three
week release period. Students are encouraged to hunt them down, read them,
register them on the Books in the Wild website, answer a question, then release the book back into the wild for someone
else to read. Simply by participating in the programme students have the
opportunity to win some awesome prizes.
Books in the Wild will be offered in the second half of 2010 so watch out for a
launch event in your school!
Waitakere’s Best and Brightest
Waitakere Library and Information Services is proud to showcase the work of
Waitakere's talented youth. We've found them in our schools, and now we're
showing them off to the rest of the city. Check out our
Best and Brightest page to see
examples of amazing work from Waitakere students.
Learning Centres
Need to use a computer but don't have one at home? The Learning Centres are here
to help and offer free access to computers and the internet for all Waitakere
City residents and ratepayers.
The Learning Centres are up-to-the-minute and staffed by friendly coordinators
who are trained and keen to help all patrons.
Waitakere has eight computer learning centres. Six are library-based at Glen
Eden Library, Ranui Library, Massey Library, New Lynn War Memorial Library,
Titirangi Library and Waitakere Central Library. Two are stand-alone centres at
Te Atatu Peninsula and Sturges West.
To use the centres, come along with your library card. Registration takes only a
couple of minutes. If you don't have a library card, it is quick and easy to
join the library.
Note: From 1 December 2007 all children under 16 will require an authorisation
form signed by their parent or legal guardian in order to use the learning
centre computers.
Authorisation forms are available from all learning centres and Waitakere
library branches or you can download a copy of this
form from the Learning Centres web page.
You need to return the signed form to a library or learning centre staff member.
