National Forum on Public Libraries and Diversity 2009
Waitakere Library & Information Services and Wellington City Libraries
participated in this year's National Diversity Forum on Public Libraries and
Diversity programme for 2009. This forum
is a part of the wider Diversity Forum organised by the Human Rights Commission
and will be held at Wellington Central Library on 23 August 2009.
Over 30 different organisations hosted forums and events
promoting cultural diversity, racial equality and positive race relations. Over
3 days, the
programme included events at regional museums (Saturday and Sunday), a wide
range of community forums, a multicultural festival and a celebration of
diversity (Sunday), and more forums and the annual diversity awards (Monday).
In it's forth year, the public libraries' forum offers an opportunity to bring together library &
Information professionals, managers and policy makers who are engaged in
delivering or developing services for ethnic communities in different
capacities.

Purpose of the forum
The purpose of every 'National Diversity forum for Public Libraries' is to
help you to:
- Consolidate support for the development of library services for
multiethnic communities and thus provide equal and equitable access to
information for all
- Share knowledge and learn from peers
- Identify opportunities to collaborate and optimise the value of
knowledge and resources.
- Showcase the projects that you have done within your library.

Participants in 2006, 07 and 08
For the past three years, Diversity Forum attendees came from 18 different Public
libraries in New Zealand. This included people who worked in different
capacities in public libraries and individual and students who have special
interest in developing services for multiethnic communities. Some of them
included:
- Library assistants who directly come in contact with customers from
different cultural backgrounds
- Customer Services Managers, Team Leaders and Policy makers
- Library professionals involved in Service Development, Program and
Project Management, Outreach services, and Teachers
- Students who are interested in knowing more about multicultural Services
within Public Libraries.
According to survey responses, what these individuals have in common is a
strong desire to network and gain from peer experience. Since the first forum
many new initiatives have been taken by libraries to develop services for people
from diverse cultural backgrounds.
