About Homework Zone

Homework Zones are an opportunity to encourage children between the ages of 7-12 years to use the libraries to complete their homework, using a reward card system.

This is a free service offered to kids after school. We offer help and guidance with homework questions and activities, whether they need to type up an assignment on the computer or find the perfect books to help research an assignment.

Examples of this include:

• Teaching children how to search the internet safely and easily
• Help printing their homework
• Teach them more about useful library resources they can use or borrow
• Showing them how to access the libraries eResources like World Book or Encyclopaedia Britannica online
• Show them exciting websites such as Any Questions or National Geographic
• Show them how they can use Microsoft Office programmes like Word and Publisher to make their work look great!

Homework doesn't have to be done entirely on computers. Any homework done 'by hand' also counts.

The homework zones operate at various times from Monday-Thursday, from 3:15-4:30pm in all learning centres and is supported by the Kidz Team member in the library branch. During this time some computers are reserved for homework, research questions, school publishing and learning activities only.

Joining the Homework Zone

To register for the homework zone, a registration form needs to be filled in and signed by a parent or guardian and then returned to the Learning centre coordinator.

*Please note: Any child can attend a Homework zone session but they have to have a current Waitakere library card to be eligible for the rewards system.

Reward System

A child participating in the Homework Zone will be issued a reward card.

Every time they attend a homework zone at any Waitakere Learning Centre and complete some homework, the card will be clipped with a clipper unique to that centre.

Once they get 8 clip marks they will be entitled to a free DVD or CD rental voucher.
