About AirPAC
AirPAC is the result of work carried out by
eLGAR (Libraries for a Greater
Auckland Region). AirPAC is software that allows users to access their library
catalogue through small screen devices such as Personal Digital Assistants (PDA)
and WAP enabled mobile phones.
Frequently asked questions
AirPAC is the new way to gain access to your library catalogue across the
Auckland Region. It is designed especially for small screen devices such as
Personal Digital Assistants (PDA) and WAP enabled mobile phones. Patrons can
interact with their library catalogue from all places accessible by their
service provider. This means they can place a hold from anywhere, renew items
during a long bus ride to work, or search the catalogue while shopping to see if
something they want is available.

Access Questions
How do you get in?
If you are able to access the internet on your mobile, type
www.elgar.govt.nz into your phone's internet browser and then select the search
of your choice from the drop down menu. To move up and down, use the standard
navigation buttons on the phone itself or the arrows at the bottom of the
phone's screen if available.
Why does AirPAC look so different?
The look of the catalogue screens viewed via the AirPAC will vary depending upon
the device.
How do I keep it?
Book marking saves your favourite sites so that you can find them again later.
Whilst using AirPAC you can do this by selecting the 'Bookmark', 'Add bookmark'
or 'Favourites' option from your phone's menu. In future, simply select the
AirPAC link from your 'Bookmarks'/'Favourites' menu to connect to AirPAC.
What mobile devices can AirPAC support?
AirPAC supports any handheld devices, PDA's or mobile phones, which provide
access to the internet.
What is WAP?
Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) is an advanced messaging service on mobile
phones and other small screen devices that allows you to see internet content in
special text format. Internet content designed for WAP access is configured
quite differently, and some variation in the accessibility of services does
occur.
If you would like more information on this feature, we recommend that you
contact your mobile phone service provider
My mobile device is internet ready, why can I not view the Library Home Page
properly?
Your systems website is a website with sophisticated functions, best viewed on
PCs, not on handheld devices. AirPAC software is specially designed website for
Mobile devices, which have very small screens.
How can I use AirPAC service via mobile devices?
Two components are required: Internet ready mobile device and Internet ready
connection path.
How do I know if my mobile device is internet ready or not?
You should check with the manufacturer of your mobile device or your
telecommunication company.
If my mobile device is internet ready, how do I setup the mobile device?
You should contact your telecommunication company to find out the setup
procedures. Different telecommunication companies have different connection
methods, procedures and prices.
What does it cost?
Operator's charges for using the internet on patron's phone will apply. Costs
vary from operator to operator. Operators may charge for time spent browsing or
amount of data downloaded. The costs for browsing the AirPAC are minimal. The
actual cost will depend on what provider the patron is using and what data plan
they use. For example, if a Telecom customer on a casual data plan (no monthly
cap or set fee) was to access the AirPAC and search for and request a title, 15
times a month, it would cost approx $2.40. That equates to 16c per book
requested.
Use
When is AirPAC more useful than the catalogue in the library?
Like any other technology, wireless networking is appropriate in some
circumstances, but not for others. Keep in mind the relative advantages and
disadvantages of wired versus wireless technologies. Wires prevail when high
performance and volume is needed; wireless finds its niche where mobility and
accuracy are the top concern.
Why do I sometimes have the correct library selected for me and sometimes I
have to select it myself?
After a search, AirPAC defaults to "View the entire collection". Patrons need to
select their library system from the dropdown menu on the search screen.
How accessible is the AirPAC for those with a disability?
AirPAC is compliant with the U.S. government's Section 508 standards for web
site accessibility, as well as the W3 Consortium's Priority 1 checklist of
guidelines for accessibility. This compliance is essential for library patrons
with disabilities because it makes sites more accessible in screen reading
software.
