Introduction

Waitakere is a good place for business. Developing a strong innovative economy is one of the Council's nine strategic platforms. Together with Waitakere Enterprise, the city's specialist economic development agency, we have a commitment to encourage and promote the economic development of the city and surrounding region.

Whether initiating a new venture in the city, relocating to Waitakere City or expanding an existing business, your first contact will be with the staff at Waitakere Enterprise who offer practical support and assistance to individuals and companies, free of charge

Waitakere City's economic base includes the well developed service sector and the light manufacturing industries. The light manufacturing sector is export oriented and already geared towards opportunities in the growing leisure market.  Accounting for 22% of paid jobs in Waitakere, the manufacturing sector is the largest earner and employer and within this sector exists some of the higher value, niche markets - boatbuilding and winemaking.

Nearly half of Waitakere's businesses are in the wholesale and retail trades, restaurants and hotels and construction sectors. Besides the wide range of businesses necessary to respond to a growing population, Waitakere is poised to enter the high-tech niche market.

A biennial business survey of the business community reveals what businesses think about Waitakere City, conducting business in the City and the services the Council provides to business.
