Internationally known local artist Jeff Thomson - who created the iconic corrugated iron Holden at Te Papa - has been commissioned by the Council to create a panel of screen-printed iron for an outside wall of the new
Titirangi Community House.
The panel includes images relating to the history of the area, the flora and fauna, drawings by local school children, poems and text. The images will be screen-printed in black onto a coloured background and will form a 'reading wall'.
This has been a breakthrough project for Thomson as it is the first time he has worked with the community to source material. The experience of working on the Titirangi project also led him to create a screen-printed, corrugated iron, miniature house, which has just been exhibited in the New Zealand Festival in Wellington.
After years refining the art of corrugated iron Thomson now has an international reputation as a master of this art form. He has produced everything from full sized cows through to corrugated iron lace curtains. The screen-printing onto iron process is something that he has developed over recent years. This is a process unique to him and is now adorning buildings around the country.
