What is a community outcome?
It is a desired state of affairs that the community has identified through a
process. These outcomes are intended to inform the development of local
authority planning, and coordinate the activities and planning of all sectors of
the community.

Waitakere's community outcomes
Waitakere's community outcomes have been generated by two panels of residents, using Waitakere City Council's 2003 Strategic Platforms and Priorities as a starting point, and including feedback from some 13 community workshops, which were held between May and August 2005. Previous consultation material was also considered by the two panels.
The result of this work was been to produce a draft Community Outcomes
report: The draft outcomes were published in the October 2005 issue of
Waitakere City News, along with a response form. Over 70% of the respondents said that they either strongly agreed or agreed with the community outcomes.

Community outcomes booklet
The final Community Outcomes booklet was published in January 2006, following community input.

Legislation for community outcomes
Schedule 10 of the Local Government Act 2002 outlines what must be included
in long-term council community plans. With
regard to community outcomes each local authority must:
- describe the community outcomes for its district or region
- describe how it will contribute to furthering the community outcomes
- describe how it will measure progress towards achieving community
outcomes
There is also a section on fostering the development of
Maori capacity to contribute to the
councils' decision-making processes.

Community Outcomes Report
The
Waitakere Community Outcomes Progress Report 2008 is the first report on the
outcomes described in the Community Outcomes booklet. The report was compiled
for two audiences, those who wish to know how we are doing and those who wish to
work out how they can contriubtute to achieving the outcomes sought by the
community.
Measures and contributing activities were grouped around each community outcome.
The measures are useful to help inform, to open dialogue with others, and to
identify the best invervention points for agencies and others working in the
community.
Information contained in the report will also help organisations and individuals
make submissions on the 2009-2019 Long Term Council Community Plan.
Watch this site for updates. These will include new data, such as from the
bi-annual Quality of Life Survey and the Census - that will be available in 2009
and 2011 respectively. These surveys are mthods of tracking progress on
commmunity outcome over a long period. Updates will also include other relevant
surveys and annual operational results that are relvant to the community
outcomes.
