Proposed
changes to parking in town centres
Draft Parking Plans - Consultation for WaitakereThe Council is currently preparing to share its Draft Parking Plans
with the wider Waitakere community to obtain public feedback before
the Plans are finalised.
The Draft Waitakere City Parking Plan is a city-wide plan for
parking management, from 2009 to 2040. The Draft Plan proposes a
broad range of complementary approaches to parking management,
services and supply for the whole city including the town centres
and growth corridors (the main arterial roads such as Lincoln and Hobsonville roads).
Draft Parking Management Plans have also been prepared for
Henderson, New Lynn and Westgate town centres.
These Draft Plans are not final and the Council may decide to make
changes to the Plans as a result of feedback received from the
public.
The wider Waitakere community will be invited to make submissions on
the draft plans before they are finalised. The date for formal
public consultation is currently being reviewed. Once it has
been confirmed, details will be posted here so please check back
regularly for updates.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the current regulatory approach to parking?
Waitakere City’s District Plan requires developments to provide
on-site parking to ensure the safe and efficient functioning of
roads. This is described as parking minimum standards i.e. a minimum
number of off-street parking spaces required for new developments or
redevelopments depending on what the land is being used for with no
upper limit on the number of spaces that can be provided.
Will on-street paid parking be introduced in Waitakere?
The Council has not made any decisions about on-street paid parking.
The object of
paid parking is to encourage high turnover of parking spaces to make
them available for more shoppers and visitors to businesses by
moving long stay parkers to town centre outskirts and encouraging
commuters to use public transport.
Paid parking is an issue that is being consulted on in the
Waitakere 10 Year Plan
(Draft Long Term Council Community Plan 2009-2019).
