For a long time, humans thought that we were
common bullies because we are so alike. But, we are
special, because we do not travel between the river
and the sea. This means that my young will live in
the same stream as me, so please take care to keep
it clean and don't build dams in it because they
will be trapped in just one part. I am a very
friendly fish and I will rest on your hand if you
hold it still on the bottom of the stream.
I live under small stones in gently-flowing streams
where I look for stream insects. I am brown with
dark and pale patterns on my side and I have a
blunter head than my common bully relatives. Boys
are much better-looking than girls because we have
an orange stripe on our backs. When spring comes, we
turn black with an orange fin and set up a place to
attract girls to. Each girl lays up to a thousand
eggs in the nest and when the young hatch they swim
around at the edges of the stream.
