World Environment Day 2008 - Waitakere City
Council Promotion
This day is organised every year on June 5, to raise world awareness of
environmental issues and hopefully, generate increasing numbers of people
wanting to live in sustainable communities.
The day is organised by the United Nations Environmental Program
(UNEP) and Waitakere City Council has participated for several years, with
steadily growing community support.
In 2008 New Zealand was the host of the World Environment Day celebrations,
this included official celebrations based in Wellington and numerous other
events around the country.
Waitakere City Council hosted the Executive Director
of the United Nations Environment Programme on a visit to Waitakere and held a
public event on the morning of Thursday 5 June on the Henderson Transport
Interchange with entertainment, prizes and giveaways to celebrate sustainability
and encourage the use of sustainable transport modes like trains, buses, walking
and cycling.
