Cleaner Production
Cleaner production is about examining production (manufacturing,
building) processes or service delivery (retail, education,
tourism) processes to increase productivity of resources and
reduce impact on the environment.
Introduction
Cleaner Production
aims to promote the efficient use of resources (energy,
water, materials) to increase business profitability and to
create a more sustainable community for Waitakere City.
Businesses and
consumers are increasingly confronted with having to rethink
how they impact on the environment through product
purchasing and packaging, recycling and waste disposal,
unsustainably harvested resources, energy and water
consumption, and transportation.
Cleaner
Production offers practical assistance to businesses and
individuals (as consumers) who would like to re-examine how
they use resources, develop ‘greener’ purchasing
practices, or would like to redirect ‘unwanted
resources’ rather than create waste.

What
is cleaner production?
It
can include concepts such as production line assessment,
product design and life cycle assessment, energy management
systems, environmental management systems, environmental
purchasing, grey-water recycling, and resource recycling.

Production Programmes.

Services
Waitakere
City Council’s cleaner production team provides a range of
services to businesses wishing assistance with recycling or

to use less toxic substances, or wanting to develop a
cleaner production programme.

Projects
Through
assisting a group of businesses examine their current
practices, identifying areas for beneficial (economic,
environmental or social) change, and working through the
issues that block or complicate change for one or more
businesses, allows solutions to be developed that benefit
both the industry and community.
Each
of the following projects seeks to increase the efficient use of
resources (water, energy and materials), develop more
efficient production processes, and to prevent resources from being turned into waste.
Newsletters
‘Wise
Resource Use’ is distributed to around 4,500 local
businesses to showcase cleaner production initiatives adopted by
other local businesses, and to provide ideas to increase efficiency and reduce impacts
on the environment.

A number of
practical resources have been developed through the Cleaner
Production programme. Many of the resources can be viewed online and are also available for bulk purchase by
organisations delivering cleaner production or consumer
education programmes.

Council’s own practices
Waitakere

implemented a number of initiatives to improve its own
performance.

Waste Minimisation and
Recycling Plans
The plan is a working template which will enable a
business or event organiser to create a 'snapshot' of their
solid waste categories (reduced, reused, recycled, hazardous
or general waste) the quantities of each, costs, source and
responsibilities on and offsite (contractor or service
provider).
The idea is to look where there may be opportunities to
improve practices and reduce amounts going direct to
landfill with the added payoff of environment and expenses
saved.
