Project Partners

A major step-forward in the war against waste has been taken with the decision by some supermarket chains to sell re-usable cloth shopping bags as an alternative to giveaway plastic bags.

This initiative has been introduced to Waitakere City by the Council's Cleaner Production team which has been part of a regional "U Prevent Waste" project for the last two years, to champion the sale of cloth bags in supermarkets and retail stores. 

U Prevent Waste is a subcommittee of the Auckland Waste Managers Forum representing Waitakere, Auckland, North Shore and Manukau City Councils and Rodney, Papakura, Franklin District Councils and Auckland Regional Council.

Major partners in making the cloth bags available and accessible to the public have been Foodstuffs Northern Region, owners of Pak'N Save, New World and Four Square stores.

The cloth bags are now available in 16 Pak'N Save stores from Kaitaia to Gisborne and will be available in July/August 2003 from New World stores within the same area.  Foodstuffs New Zealand are preparing on offering the cloth bags to the rest of New Zealand soon after.

Placing shopping in a reusable cloth is one simple action that many New Zealanders could undertake towards protecting the future of New Zealand's environment. Protect Our Future - Reuse Today' has been designed for use on cloth bags anywhere within New Zealand. The graphic is available for any organisation, community group, council or business to use within its accompanying style guidelines. Complete the online form on the Waste Management Institute of New Zealand's web site to request access to the 'Protect Our Future - Reuse Today' graphic.

Project Information

A number of resources (posters, supermarket docket advertisements) are being developed for community groups or councils wanting to encourage the adoption of reusable cloth bags.
