Town Centre Revitalisation
A community-led process in 1998 - “Swanson: Beyond 2000” " has provided the basis for significant upgrading of the Swanson area. The process led to a vision and then to a staged programme of capital projects - the Swanson Village Revitalisation programme.
Traffic calming has been identified as a priority and five traffic islands in conjunction with the kerb and channelling will be put in place along Swanson Road during the summer of 2001/2002.
Future stages of the Revitalisation programme will be planned between Council and the community. These include tree planting along Swanson Rd and the development of two parks in the Swanson area " land on the corner of Swanson Oaks and Swanson Rd, and the land between the rail station and service station.

Structure Plan
The
1200 hectares of the Swanson Structure Plan area includes
all land in the Swanson catchment that is identified in the
District Plan as Foothills Environment. The draft structure
plan recommends some additional subdivision opportunities
where they would be consistent with the existing landscape
character and environmental and amenity values.
Included is 41 hectares of green-fields south of
Swanson Village, known locally as the Penihana land. The
Council and the community are currently working through a
planning process to determine the extent to which this land
may be suitable for urban development, given its close
proximity to the Swanson railway station and that it is
within the Auckland Metropolitan Drainage District.
The Council made decisions on the submissions to the
Swanson
Structure Plan in January 2003. 19
Environment Court appeals have been lodged on those
decisions, with many parties registering their interest in
those appeals. Resolution of those issues is awaiting
the outcomes of the Structure Planning Review and the
Waitakere Ranges Protection Project.
