Art of fathering celebrated

The art of fathering takes centre stage in Waitakere for the annual Focus on Fathering Week.

Coordinated by Violence Free Waitakere and the council, the event runs 31 August to 6 September and features a wide range of fun and informative activities to champion the role fathering has in the community.

The week kicks off with the author and founder of Essentially Men, Rex McCann, joining other well known Westie personalities in the launch on 31 August.

The week aims to provide a forum for dads to talk about the issues they face and to celebrate the successes in their roles as fathers. It's also about introducing men to a range of services and support networks available in the community and highlight the role fathers play in the future of Waitakere.

Men's Group - A Special Film Screening (Size 95K)	Friday 4 and Saturday 5 September - At Unitec, Ratanui Street, Henderson
Guiding your under 5's (Size 66K)	Saturday 5 September - A safe, fun, positive, inspiring and creative workshop where you will be given tools you can use at home - Tui Retreat, West Coast Road
Make Music with Dad (Size 230K)	Saturday 5 September - A fun workshop opportunity for dads and kids at the Rhythm Centre
Photographic exhibition at WestCity Mall	A Photographic exhibition featuring images taken by local school children of men in fathering roles

The week culminates with two major events on Father's Day with the Dads Day Out/Big Clean Up at Tui Glen (see flyer below) in the morning, combining kayaking on the Henderson Creek, a cycle event, music and dance acts plus other fun events.

• Dads and Daughters Camp (Size 304K) - At Carey Park from Friday 28 to Sunday 30 August
• Teen Dads Group (Size 51K) - Week 1 starting Tuesday 18 August 6pm to 8pm
• No Sweat Parenting - Hoani Waititi Marae on Wednesday 9 September 7pm to 8.30pm
• A Hot Tips Parenting course starts in Te Atatu Peninsula starts on Thursday, 10 September 2009
• Journey to the Falls (Size 602K) - An overnight trek for dads and sons on the weekend of the 12-13 September
• Man Alive is running its Men in Relationships (Size 470K) course starting 15 September 2009
