Japanese Garden
In February 1997 Waitakere City received a wonderful gift
from our Sister City Kakogawa in Japan, this gift being a
Japanese garden.
The Japanese garden was relocated when Council moved to
offices in Henderson in 2006. The garden is situated north
of the civic building at
6 Henderson
Valley Road, Henderson.
The garden is inspired by the traditional viewing gardens
that originated in the 15th century, Japan.
Viewing gardens tend to promote contemplation when viewed
from an adjoining pavilion. In addition to plants, the
viewing garden makes artistic use of rocks, artificial
hills, ponds, stone lanterns and the flowing water of rivers
and streams, and waterfalls.
With these elements the Japanese viewing garden
traditionally creates a scenic composition that mimics
nature. This means that when you move through a Japanese
garden, you not only see with your eyes you listen, feel,
and live its simplicity and beauty.
This garden melds New Zealand natives with exotic and
Japanese plants to reflect the partnership between Waitakere
City and its Japanese Sister City,
Kakogawa.
The garden is open to the public to view at all times.
