The relationship between Huntington Beach and Waitakere City arose from an association between the Piha and Huntington Beach surf life saving communities. The current programme includes:
An annual reciprocal (self funded) student exchange for 15-17 year olds.
Annual exchange between the Huntington Beach and Piha surf live saving clubs.
Exchange of library material between Huntington Beach Municipal Library and Waitakere City Libraries.
Ongoing dialogue and information sharing between Huntington Beach and Waitakere Civil Defence Units.
Information sharing between the Huntington Beach City Office and Waitakere City Council.
The Mayors of Huntington Beach and Waitakere City have both expressed a desire to establish greater links in the arts and cultural areas.
About Huntington Beach
Huntington Beach is located on the shore of the Pacific Ocean in
north-western Orange County. It is surrounded by Westminster to the North, Fountain Valley to the northeast, Costa Mesa and Newport Beach to the east and Seal Beach to the west. Los Angeles is located 35 miles to the northwest and San Diego is 95 miles to the southeast.
Founded in the late 1880's, Huntington Beach was incorporated on 17 February 1909. Population stands at 190,000. It is the third largest city in Orange County and the 92 largest city in the United States.
