Waitakere Pacific Board Inc (WPB)
Previously known as Pacific Islands Advisory Board (PIAB)
The Pacific Community of Waitakere currently makes up 15.3% of Waitakere's
total population. It brings together nine Pacific Nations, Cook Islands, Fiji,
Kiribati, Niue, Samoa, Tahiti, Tokelau, Tonga and Tuvalu.
The Board's new structure consists of nine Pacific
Nations, eight sectors, a Patron and a executive committee
of nine.
The Waitakere Pacific Board Incorporated (WPB), represents the voices of Pacific peoples in the Council and other stakeholders in the city. Its main aim is to contribute effectively to the running of Waitakere City and improve on the socio-economic status of the Pacific Community.
Community Partnership Agreement with Council
The Waitakere City Council has had a strong relationship
with the Waitakere Pacific Board since its
establishment in 1990.
A formal Memorandum of Understanding was signed with the
Board in 1998. This recognised the significance of the Board
as a voice for Pacific peoples in the City.
A Community Partnership Agreement signed in December 2005 to
better reflect the nature of the relationship between
Council and the Board.

Features of the Community Partnership Agreement
- Objectives include a commitment to working together
to achieve social and economic wellbeing and strong
integrated communities in Waitakere.
- Based on partnership principles e.g. recognises the
autonomy and independence of both parties and an agreement
to act towards each other honestly and in good faith.
- Includes a commitment to develop and implement an
annual shared work programme.
This is a unique and dynamic relationship calling for the empowerment of
the Pacific community.

The WPB Vision
That Pacific peoples in Waitakere city are empowered to fully participate in the decision making processes at local government level and pursuing a strong socio-economic framework that will sustain growth, self-sufficiency and equity for the Pacific community in Waitakere city, throughout the Auckland region, and at national and international
levels.
The WPB Goal
The Board is to effectively work on a partnership basis with the Waitakere City Council and other relevant agencies, to address and improve on the governance and socio-economic conditions impacting on the Pacific peoples, whilst maintaining their cultural integrity and diversity.
Board Membership
Executive composition of four office holders, a Council
Representative,
two Pacific nation representatives, two sector champions,
and a Patron, ten Pacific Nations Representatives and eight Sector Champions.
Total Board membership is 24. Elections take place every
three years. The next election of Officers is
March/April 2009.
