The upgrade of the Waitakere
City Aquatic Centre is an example of arts/design
collaboration in action.
Artist Virginia King has been working with the architects
from the early stages of the development. Her contribution has had a major
impact on the interior design from the actual form of some of the water
play features right through to the colours, textures and layout.
The leisure pool environment evokes the Waitakere Ranges from the huge stone wall and waterfall/dam to the free-flowing pool shapes suggestive of rock pools and
mountain streams.
Of particular note, are the Nikau palms on the lazy river, the steel and fibre optic fountain poles and the
cascading fibre “chandelier.”
Other artworks are:
-
Bronze flora and fauna inlays in the tots pool: Virginia
King
-
Ceramic fish in Learners and Hydrotherapy pool: Zeke Wolf
-
Glass window feature in the fitness centre: Graeme Gash
-
Painting in the fitness centre: Dean Buchanan
The redevelopment also included two projects by local iwi. Ngati Whatua artist Bernard Makoare
designed images related to water that are now part of a large glass wall in the foyer.
Te Kawerau a Maki have provided text about the forests of the Waitakere Ranges for a major feature at the head of the main pool. The text
is carved in Maori and English onto a stone waterfall with gentle water running over it.
