A high level of street lighting is provided on major roads within the urban areas of the city. A lesser standard of street lighting is provided on minor urban roads and in rural areas, lighting is used selectively where it can be justified to address road safety issues.
The Transport Assets section carries out upgrading and maintenance of street lighting. The programmed works list identifies sites where upgrading is proposed. These upgrades are divided into two categories.
The main streets programme that replaces existing lights mounted on power poles with new streetlight poles in conjunction with underground power reticulation by United Networks.
The secondary roads street lighting programme that upgrades the intensity and distribution of street lighting on secondary roads with high accident rates during the hours of darkness.
