After years of appalling suffering and the death of millions during the second
World War, when it became clear Germany was losing the war, Hitler committed
suicide. Germany signed an unconditional surrender at Rheims on May 7 1945.
The Allies declare May the 8th to be V-E Day, Victory in Europe Day. However war
did not reach an end until the surrender of Japan on August 14, 1945.
