The Waitakere City Library & Information Services in partnership with the Waitakere Branch of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists will be offering free genealogy workshops for children aged between 8-12 years of age between Saturday 5 July and Thursday 10 July.

The workshops will take place at the Waitakere Central Library, Massey Library, New Lynn Library and Glen Eden Library.

The "Finding Your Genes" children's genealogy workshops will provide children with the skills and knowledge to access relevant genealogy in all its different formats.

Children will learn about birth, death and marriage certificates and how to find out information from the certificates.

Children will also be made aware of microfiche CD's and places to visit to find more information such as Archives New Zealand and the Church of the Latter Day Saints. "Finding Your Genes" children's workshops will provide children with the opportunity to construct their own family tree or pedigree chart online.

Only four children will be registered for each workshop due to the availability of computers at each of the Learning Centres. "Finding Your Genes" children's workshops are an introduction to genealogy resources available in the Waitakere Library and Information Services. Students will have the opportunity to view new children's genealogy resources.

'Run for Mayor' School Holiday Workshop

Waitakere City has a New Mayor!

However, Waitakere Mayor Bob Harvey can rest assured that his job is safe.  The newly-elected 'mayor' will hold the title in name only, being the winner of the October school holiday workshops 'Run for Mayor' held at the Waitakere Learning Centres'.

The workshops aimed to give kids an idea of how elections work.  They had to write their own manifesto and use a computer to design their own promotional material.  Prior to the workshop, children filled out a workbook at home with their parents and consolidated their ideas for their campaigns.

It was a chance for kids to think about what issues are important to them and what changes or improvements they would make in their local government if they had the power to do so.

Their wishes for change covered everything from stopping speeding motorists and wiping out graffiti to creating work peace and outlawing divorce.

A prize giving ceremony was held at Waitakere Central Library on Thursday 15 November to acknowledge the four branch winners whom were elected winners of their local library and learning centre branches.  They are:

Run for Mayor Winner - Candice Roth

Hiwote Yimer, Candice Roth, Dulith Hewage, Erika Tane

Dulith Hewage - Glen Eden Learning Centre branch winner

Erika Tane - Te Atatu Peninsula branch winner

All of the branch winners won a $20 Whitcoulls voucher and Mayor Bob Harvey game them each a copy of this book 'Westies'.

Candice Roth also won an Apple iPod Shuffle as the overall winner and Mayor Bob wrote her a personalised letter of congratulations.

Magical Madness Month

The Learning Centres became the hub of magical comic creation over the school holidays in June.  Children came up with imaginative storylines and even created their own characters.  They then used Microsoft Powerpoint to make their story and add cool animations and sounds.  We had some fantastic comics, check out some of the work the children did below, just click on the picture.

Eat Around the World

The theme for the April school holiday workshops was eating around the World.  The children came in and searched the Internet for recipes from different countries.  They then made their very own creative recipe book.  Some of them even made up their own recipes in the style of Roald Dahl's 'Revolting Recipes'.  Plenty of global gourmet fun was had by the kids!

Don't monkey around

The kids had a great time creating website of their favourite animals.  Check out some of the websites created.

The children had a great time making Roald Dahl style stories. They produced an on-line book in PowerPoint with sounds and animations, and a hard copy printout. Some "interesting" stories were produced, full of humour, scary stuff and enough slime and grime to make Roald proud!

Check out some of the stories created by the kids:

Note:  You will need to have Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003 installed on your computer in order to view the presentations or alternatively you can download the free Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer.   Apple Mac OS X 10.4 or later can download the free ThinkFree Viewer.
