Puriri Injury Prevention Project
Child Restraint Programme
at Puawairua Te Kohanga Reo
Puawairua Te Kohanga Reo piloted a child restraint
programme with Kohanga Reo whanau, October completed
December 2007.
There were three phases to the project:
Baseline survey was performed morning and afternoon of the
same day, to determine the usage rate of child restraints
amongst Puawairua Kohanga Reo whanau. The survey found 8 out
of 38 (21%) of child occupants were incorrectly restrained
(10% restrained with an adult seatbelt without the use of a
booster seat, 5.3% incorrectly restrained in an age
appropriate child restraint and 5% unrestrained).
Campaign marketing involved letters being issued, by
Puawairua Kohanga management, to vehicle owners cited during
the observation period. It provided information relevant to
child vehicle occupants. The use of booster seats was
highlighted in the letter providing a simple test they could
perform themselves.
Here is a simple test you can do to see if your child should
still use a booster for the safety belt to fit correctly.
- Can the child sit all the way back on the seat?
- Can they bend their knees comfortably at the edge of
the seat?
- Does the safety belt sit on their shoulder and NOT
cross the neck?
- Is the lap section sitting across their thighs and
NOT on the tummy?
If you answered NO to any of these
questions your child should still be using a booster seat.
Promotion included whanau participation with the Clikki
Rikki and Driveway Run over interactive resources. Every
child that participated with the promotion received a
t-shirt with a road safety message, courtesy of Whaea Grace
Tahuri; "Pakeke Ma...Whakamaua Matou, Hey Big
People...Buckle Me In".
The post observation survey found, and perceived that as a
result of the marketing and promotion strategies the usage
rate of restraints increased; 3 out of 26 (12%) children
counted were incorrectly restrained, 46% increased use.
Congratulations Puawairua Te Kohanga Reo.
