Heritage Sites in Waitakere City

Albion Vale

Located at 527 West Coast Road, Oratia is a two storey colonial style timber weatherboard building with Slate roof, built in 1879. The house is the original Parr family homestead that has been restored to its original internal design. The site also contains magnolia and oak trees from the original Parr Nursery. The house is listed as a Category I heritage building and its significance is attributed to historical, architectural and visual values.

Ambrico Place Kiln

Brickworks, downdraft kiln 1920s. Historically significant. Located at Ambrico Place, New Lynn.

Opening Hours: Can be viewed anytime as it is an external structure.

Chapel of Faith-in-the-Oaks

Finely detailed small masonry chapel with plaster walls and pitched slate roof, built in the 1880s. Historical, architectural, community, visual and sense of place significance. Located in the Waikumete Cemetery, Glenview Rd, Glen Eden.

Colin McCahon House

Board and batten house on bush clad hill slope. Former home of noted artist Colin McCahon. Historically significant. Located at 67 Otitori Bay Rd, French Bay.

Opening Hours: 10am-2pm - Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday

Corbans Homestead and various buildings

The Corban homestead, adjacent former garage, and winery building (including former cellars, bottling hall, stables and workers canteen, now wine shop, offices, despatch and storage areas), distilling tower building, all built between 1907 and the 1950s. Historical and architectural significance. Located at 426-488 Great North Rd, Henderson. Part of the Henderson Heritage Trail.

Opening Hours: 9:30am - 5pm, 7days.

Corbans Wineshop

Masonry structure, gabled roof building, built 1912. Historical and sense of place significance. Located at Corban Winery Estate, 426-488 Great North Rd, Henderson.

Falls Hotel 

Asymmetrical two-storey kauri weatherboard stripped Georgian style building, built around 1854-1862. A landmark with historical, architectural and visual significance. Located in Alderman Drive, Henderson.

Opening Hours: 8am - 5pm

Glen Eden Playhouse

Art Deco style red brick building, built 1935. Architectural, historical, landmark and visual significance. Located at Glendale Rd, Glen Eden.

Opening Hours: 10am - 4pm Monday to Friday, also by arrangement.

Glen Eden Railway Station

Weatherboard railway station building. Historical, architectural and pattern significance.  Located at Glen Eden Town Centre, West Coast Road, Glen Eden.

Glen View Rd House (Waikumete Cemetery)

The style of the cottage is consistent with the architecture of the late Victorian period in NZ. The cottage in Glenview Road was originally sited at 109 Beach Road, central Auckland, and was relocated to Waikumete cemetery in 1916, to provide accommodation for the foreman in charge of improvements at the cemetery. The house has considerable cultural heritage significance attributed to historical association with the Wesleyan Mission, Waikumete Cemetery, public works in the Auckland area. The dwelling is located at 6 Glenview Road, Glen Eden. 

This is not open to public.

Herald Island Post Office

1920s weatherboard building. Historical and architectural significance.  Located at Ferry Parade, Herald Island.

Judo Club

Tile hipped roof rectangular building, built circa 1927. Historical and architectural significance. Located at 501 South Titirangi Rd, behind Lopdell House, Titirangi.

Lopdell House

Concrete building with clay tile roof, built 1936. Architectural, historical, visual/landmark and community/cultural significance. Located at 418 Titirangi Rd, Titirangi.

Opening Hours: 10am - 4pm

Former Massey Post Office

Weatherboard building, built 1930s. Historical, landmark and sense of place significance. Located at 393-397 Don Buck Rd, Massey.

Mausoleums

Masonry mausoleums. Significance attributed to historical values. Located in the Waikumete Cemetery, Glenview Rd, Glen Eden.

Mill Cottage 

Weatherboard house, built 1850s. Significance attributed to historical, architectural and visual values. Located at Sel Peacock Drive, Henderson. Mill Cottage is also part of the Henderson Heritage Trail.

Oratia Folk Museum

Located at 527 West Coast Road Oratia, the museum is a simple timber weatherboard cottage with a steeply gabled shingle roof. It was originally built on Parker Road in 172 but was transported to the site for use as a museum. It is listed as a Category II building and its significance is attributed to historical, architectural, visual and community values. It is open to the public on weekends and by appointment.

Opening Hours: 1pm - 4pm Sunday or by appointment.

Rose Hellaby House

Weatherboard cottage style house, built 1939. Significance attributed to historical, architectural, community and visual values. Located at 515 Scenic Drive, West Coast.

Sexton’s House

Triple gabled weatherboard bay villa, built 1886. Significance attributed to historical, architectural, visual and sense of place values. Located in the Waikumete Cemetery, Great North Rd, Glen Eden.

St Michael’s Anglican Church

Weatherboard building, built 1914. Historically and architecturally significant. It was brought on-site from 425 Great North Rd and relocated to 426-448 Great North Rd, Henderson.

Swan’s Arch

Brick and timber braced arch, built 1901-31. Historical, architectural and visual significance. Also see the history of Swan’s Arch. It may also be viewed as part of the Henderson Heritage Trail

Swanson Railway Station

Weatherboard railway station building relocated from original Avondale site. Historical, architectural and pattern significance. Now home to the excellent Swanson Station Cafe , open Tues- Sun 7am-5pm (Ph: (09) 833 9999). Located at Swanson Rd, Swanson.

Opening Hours: Can be viewed anytime as it is an external structure.

Tui Glen Motor Camp 

Assorted early campground buildings. Historical, architectural and visual significance. Located at Claude Brooks Drive, Henderson. Tui Glen Motor Camp is also part of the Henderson Heritage Trail

New Lynn Hotel (to be acquired)

Two-storey brick and cement-render hotel building, built 1881. Historical, architectural and landmark significance. Located at 3176 Great North Rd, New Lynn.

Opening Hours: Can be viewed anytime as it is an external structure.

Waikumete Cemetery

Significance attributed to its regional, cultural, historic, community, pattern and sense of place values. Located in Great North Rd, Glen Eden. Also see Chapel of Faith-in-the-Oaks, Glen View Rd House, Mausoleums and Sexton’s House.
