About Trash to Fashion®

  • Trash to Fashion® the show, is the end product of an event that aims to provide its contestants with the chance to design and create costumes out of recycled, inorganic and organic materials. It's an opportunity to make something wonderful from those things that are left over, and usually thrown away.

  • Trash to Fashion® is a powerful tool for Waitakere City Council to promote the "recycle, reduce and reuse" message to its own communities and beyond through an innovative mix of costume art, fashion, performance, and music.

  • The concept originated in 1996 as part of Keep Waitakere Beautiful's Operation Spring Clean, and was run jointly by KWB and Waitakere City Council. The event is co-ordinated by the Arts Team at the Council.

  • Trash to Fashion® has become New Zealand's largest recycled fashion show drawing designers and audiences from throughout the country and internationally. It attracts participation from a variety of groups, cultures, and abilities including established and emerging designers.

  • Over 200 designers compete across different  categories for prizes and the Supreme Award. Costumes can only be made from recycled and/or organic material. The costumes are worn by professional models and dancers who present the garments in a specially choreographed performance that includes guest entertainers. View images of past award winners.

  • Many schools introduce Trash to Fashion® as a curriculum activity.

  • Responsible for creating the show each year is a production team that bring their individual arts disciplines together to conjure up the unique Trash to Fashion® entertainment experience.

  • Contact Jeannette Aldridge if you have any questions or wish to join the Trash to Fashion® mailing list.

In cooperation with Keep Waitakere Beautiful Trust, and Waitakere City Council, Playcentre are very excited to present the opportunity for pre-school aged children to explore their creativity with an environmental focus with the Playcentre Trash to Fashion® Awards.

Auckland ycentre Association are organising The Playcentre Trash To Fashion® Awards for pre-school aged children and selecting four entries to be part of The Schools Trash To Fashion® 2008 Awards show.

This is the first time that there has been the ability for pre-school aged children to participate in the Trash to Fashion® event.

Playcentres are focusing on sustainability this year and believe that this is one step towards lifelong learning about the environment. Our focus is on "small steps to effect change" and this is one of many initiatives to promote sustainable education for young children.
