Project Twin Streams Walk/Cycle Ways
Introduction
 |
| Opanuku Walk/cycleway |
 |
| Henderson Park |
Work is almost complete on the 8.6km network of walk and cycle paths which run
alongside the Oratia,
Opanuku and Waikumete Streams.
The following sections, totalling 6.7km are now complete and open to the public:
Oratia Stream - 1.6km Lower Opanuku - 2.6km Lower Waikumete - 540m
Millbrook Road (Oratia Stream) - 1.4km Upper Waikumete - 600m.
The final 1.85km section along the Upper Opanuku commenced construction in June
and is due to be completed by April 2010.
The three metre wide paths provide ample space for walkers, runners and cyclists
and can also be used by:
- mobility scooter users
- wheelchair users
- parents with push-chairs
- children learning to ride their bikes
- skateboarders
Motorcycles, scooters and other motorised vehicles are not permitted.
With tiled artwork, community art installations, information panels and examples
of sustainable products such as permeable paving and solar lighting, the paths
enable residents and visitors to see and enjoy the streams.
The paths provide links to local streets, public
transport, schools and community facilities, town centres, parks, and off-road
connections to the north-western cycleway.

Project Twin Streams walk and cycleways scoop another top award
Project Twin Streams' 9.3km network of walk and cycle ways has scooped the
Avanti Award for the Best Cycle Facility at the recent (November 2009) CAN
(Cycling Advocate Network) Annual Awards.
The award recognises the practical contribution the walk and cycleway network
has made to encourage walking and cycling within Waitakere.
A recent survey showed a 49% increase in the number of Waitakere cyclists
from 2007 to 2009; 32% of this increase coinciding with the completion of the
majority of Project Twin Streams pathways.

Twin Streams walk and cycle ways win Golden Foot Award
 |
| PTS walk and cycle ways win the Golden Foot Award |
The Project Twin Streams walk and cycleway network scooped a Golden Foot
Award in July 2009 - acknowledging what the city's pedestrians already knew - our
walkways are the best.
The network was judged to be the country's Best Practice Walking Facility at
the inaugural Best Practice Walking Awards - run by the New Zealand Transport
Agency and Living Streets Aotearoa.
Waitakere City Councillor Linda Cooper says the Golden Foot Award is recognition
of the partnership between the council and community that has allowed the
Project Twin Streams walk and cycle ways to flourish.
"This project of walk and cycle ways shows how locally-led urban planning can
meet local needs while also contributing toward national ideals such as
encouraging sustainable transport and fighting the obesity epidemic," Councillor
Cooper says.
"I
hope this latest accolade will highlight the project's success and help Project
Twin Streams secure continued funding after the new Auckland Council is formed
next year".

Events
Eco-City Challenge (rogaine)
 |
| Great North Road entrance to Lower Opanuku Walk/
Cycleway. |
 |
| Walk/cycleway in use during West Bike Fest. |
The inaugural Eco-City
Challenge in April
2008 utilised parts of the pathways and again travelled over components of the
pathways in 2009. The Eco-City Challenge is a four hour urban navigation
challenge (Rogaine) taking in the extensive track network joining the parks and
other green spaces of Waitakere City. Teams of two to five people navigate
their way, using the provided map, to as many checkpoints as they can either
walking, running, by bus or train.
This is an event for social teams, families,
school teams - anyone who wants a navigational challenge around the
parks of
Waitakere City.
West Bike Fest, 21 February 2009
An
activity-based event at Corban Estate including a fun ride along the
Opanuku
Walk and Cycleway as part of the annual Bike Wise promotion programme.
Project Twin Streams planting events
The Project Twin Streams
contract organisations run
planting days and other events stream-side over the
year. See the Events Calendar for details, or contact your
