New Lynn could look like. Click to enlarge image.
New Lynn has a future that one day will see it rival
places like Newmarket as one of the most prestigious town
centres in the Auckland region.
Millions of dollars are being poured into New Lynn right now
by central and regional government and Waitakere City,
with millions more to come, to ensure that it grows into a
stunning place to live, work, do business, relax and be
entertained.
It will be a place people come to enjoy the experience that
will be New Lynn of the future.
Biggest rail project in New Zealand

What can be seen in New Lynn right now is the largest New
Zealand railway project for several decades, with a
kilometre-long trench being dug through the town centre
along the railway corridor. This is being carried out by the
Government through ONTRACK (New Zealand Railways Corp.) as
part of
Project DART.
When this massive trench is complete, the double track
railway will be lowered into it. This will allow trains to
pass through the town centre in both directions every 10
minutes without holding up traffic flows, which will cross
the railway on bridges.
A stunning new station will be built in the trench and
link directly to a bus interchange on the roads above so
that passengers won't even have to cross the road to move
between bus and rail.
Comprehensive bus and rail services
This will enable very comprehensive bus and rail services
within New Lynn and connect New Lynn with the rest of the
region. The aim is to make these services so frequent and to
serve so many people that a timetable won't be necessary and
most people won't need a car to get around quickly, cheaply
and conveniently.
Auckland Regional Transport Authority (ARTA) is working on
the development of these services right now so that the
first stage of enhanced services can be serving New Lynn
when the trench opens in about mid-2010.
All this is modelled on overseas examples that do work.

These transport developments pave the way for the
revitalisation of New Lynn as one of the most important town
centres in the Auckland region to work, to do business, to
go shopping and for bars restaurants, cafes, theatres and
cinemas.
Housing for an urban lifestyle
The concept plans show a great deal of high-rise,
high-density housing close to the town centre, to house up
to twice as many people as presently live in New Lynn. These
will mostly be people who have adopted the urban lifestyle
so common overseas: living in apartments, working close to
home, owning businesses in the town centre, commuting by
train and bus, walking and cycling.
These residential quarters are linked closely to the plans
for the business areas - and linked back to the transport
system - so that every part of the big picture works with
the other.
The business centre is also expected to at least double in
size. The concept plans call for:
a Merchants' Quarter,
a
Main Street Quarter,
Business hub
the Portage Business Quarter and
the
Axis Retail Quarter.
Transport Oriented Development
The redevelopment of the town centre in this way to
incorporate residential, business and transport development
is known as a Transport Oriented Development or TOD for
short.

After six months and 89,000 cubic metres, the excavation
of the New Lynn Rail Trench is complete.
DART Project Director Ted Calvert, Waitakere Deputy Mayor Penny
Hulse, Fletcher Construction's Construction Manager John
Palm and Project Manager Malcolm McDonald are pictured
scooping out the last bits of clay the old-fashioned way.
It is another significant milestone for the 860-metre-long,
8m-deep trench, which runs through the heart of New Lynn and
will remove two busy level crossings.
The final base slabs are now being laid and work is complete
on two new bridges at Clark St/Rankin Ave and Ward
St/Veronica St, which will see the interaction between cars
and trains banished for good.
Work is well underway on two brand new bridges at Memorial
Dr and Hetana St, which will make traveling around New Lynn
easier than ever.
The first track is due to be laid inside the trench, along
with a temporary station, in March next year, followed by
the second track in June.
The trench is a key part of Project DART, the $600m initial
upgrade of Auckland's rail network, and involves duplicating
the tracks and lowering them into a trench below ground,
removing the interaction between cars and trains for the
first time in decades.
