Waitakere Library & Information Services
The library service is provided by the Council because its sees the general provision of libraries and access to recreation and knowledge as a key to the wellbeing of the community. Libraries also specifically help the Council to achieve its objective of a city where the residents have learning opportunities throughout their lives.

The Libraries Service is vitally important in assisting the Council develop a 'smart City', a learning society by meeting the following aims:
- provide access to good quality information for all
- provide opportunities for informed decision making for all
- provide opportunities for lifelong learning
- recognise diverse communities
- deliver facilities and services to communities that meet their needs, choices and preferences
- enable the City's different communities to express their views and needs
Waitakere Libraries' Mission Statement
To provide open access to leisure and recreation opportunities, and to high quality information and knowledge, within a social context, in an equitable way.
Our goals
Three goals for the library service were adopted by Council in 1996. These are:
- Library services will provide for open access to information and knowledge for all people to read, to learn, to enjoy, to
discover
- Library services will provide encouragement for all people to broaden their leisure and learning interests, enrich their activity and cultural life and reach their full
potential
- Libraries will be centres for the City's communities.
Our principles
A guiding principle for the library service is that it is recognised as a proactive influence in the overall development of the City and its people. More specifically, the library service will have the following as principles for provision (in no priority order):
- equity and open access
- flexibility
- partnership
- innovation
