West Coast Plan Summary
The vision
As guardians of the West Coast and Waitakere Ranges, we
acknowledge the interdependence of the people with this
dramatic and inspiring place. The sea, the coast, and the
ranges are envisioned as supporting a superb quality of life
for the people and locally appropriate plants and wildlife,
which is sustained for all generations.
The West Coast
Plan
The West Coast Plan is a strategic plan for the
West Coast beaches and the Waitakere Ranges. It sets out
what the community desires for the future of these areas. It
describes what needs to be done, and when, to achieve this
future. The Plan does not have any legal status, but can be
used as a guide by relevant authorities when developing
policies and projects for the West Coast area. The West
Coast Plan Liaison Group will advocate to ensure that this
happens. They will also monitor the decisions and actions of
public agencies in this area. Each resident can make the
Plan their own and be proud of it.
How did the Plan come
about?
The West Coast communities themselves developed the Plan
after 4 years of intensive work. It contains their vision,
goals, targets & actions or the future of the West Coast
and Waitakere Ranges. It represents the views of many
individuals and organisations that were a part of the
process. The completion of the plan was celebrated on 25
August 2001, when the dream was launched.
What do we want to
achieve?
- To protect the wild and remote qualities of the West
Coast and Waitakere Ranges.
- To ensure everyone is able to experience and enjoy the
West Coast and Waitakere Ranges.
- To promote public and community consultation,
involvement and action.
- To provide opportunities for people to increase their
knowledge of the Waitakere Ranges, the West Coast and
its communities.
- To recognise and support the unique and diverse
character of West Coast communities.
- To work co-operatively to protect the sea, the coast
and the ranges.
How do we want to achieve
it?
- By investigating ways to improve co-ordinated
management and protection of the Waitakere Ranges.
- By continuing to provide opportunities for debate on
the different aspirations of stakeholders for both
private and public land in the Waitakere Ranges and West
Coast.
- By encouraging the further promotion and
identification of the Waitakere Ranges as an area of
national significance.
- By encouraging all local and national agencies and
authorities to consider ways of limiting local and
regional growth pressures on the West Coast.
The Plan's four goals address the West Coast’s natural
environment, the built environment, communities and
recreation. These four goals contain more than 19 targets
and 123 actions describing what needs to be done. It is the
task of the West Coast Plan Liaison Group (members
representing iwi, community, environment and service groups)
to work towards the implementation of the actons.
