CUSSAP

Comprehensive Urban Stormwater Strategy and Action Plan or CUSSAP

We know – the title is a mouthful! In 1999, Waitakere City Council and EcoWater Solutions obtained funding from the Sustainable Management Fund, a section of the Ministry for the Environment. This money has been used to develop and implement a comprehensive strategy and action plan for the long-term, sustainable management of stormwater within Waitakere City.

CUSSAP has been an excellent opportunity to gather together all the best practice guidelines and thinking about stormwater to help set future goals for managing our stormwater. What Waitakere City Council learned from developing this plan has been shared with other local governments around New Zealand.

The CUSSAP project comprises 12 separate reports. Much of the content is aimed at technical experts but each report has a three-page summary that makes it easier for the layperson to digest the main points.

Overview

The natural water cycle is essential to life on Earth. Our cities have modified this water cycle by developing stormwater, water supply and wastewater services to enable people and ecosystems to survive in urban areas. Stormwater management is an essential part of this urban water cycle and any structural arrangement for the management of urban water services needs to provide for the synergies between stormwater, water supply and wastewater and for the overlaps between stormwater management and other functions and activities.

CUSSAP comprises 12 separate reports. Much of the content is aimed at technical experts but wider community input has been facilitated by a range of initiatives including education programmes. See below for an overview of the CUSSAP report structure.
