About the Council

Local government is the closest level of government to the people.  Waitakere City Council, as the local government of Waitakere City, has responsibilities for all aspects of the City. Some of these are core responsibilities under legislation, others are responsibilities arising from the direction the City has chosen to move in.

The Council has committees with specific areas of responsibility. Council's Standing Committees are:

Community Boards provide strong links to their local communities. It is their responsibility to consider matters which Council refers to them, and to contribute a local community view to Council's decision making processes.

In February 1993, Waitakere City Council set a bold new direction. It became an eco city, adopting the mission statement Waitakere eco city and 3 goals - sustainable, dynamic and just.

The Waitakere City Council also conducts household surveys and business surveys to find out what residents of Waitakere think of the Council’s performance- what we are doing well and where we need to improve. Have a look at the latest survey results.
