Age (results from 2001 Census)

Waitakere City is a young city with 39% of its population under the age of 24. One third of Waitakere’s population is under 20 years of age. The percentage of under five years is slightly less than previous years at 8.4%. The age group occupying the highest percentage of Waitakere City is 30-34 years – not surprising since the average (mean) age is 32.8 (increase from 1996 at 31.9). Waitakere has a growing population of people over the age of 65 with 8.8% (14,826) in 2001 from 7.5% (10,329) in 1991.

  • The median age of Maori people in Waitakere City is 21.1 years
  • 2.1% of Maori people in Waitakere City are aged 65 and over, and 38.7% of Maori are aged under 15.

Ethnicity (results from 2001 Census)

Note: percentages do not total 100, as people may belong to more than one ethnic group.

  • 71.9% of people (114,867) in Waitakere City said they belong to the European ethnic group.  For all New Zealand 80.1% said they belong to the European ethnic group.
  • 13.4% of people (21,390) in Waitakere City said they belong to the Mäori ethnic group compared with all of New Zealand at 14.7%
  • The population of Waitakere City contains a larger proportion of Pacific peoples (14.5%) and larger proportion of Asian people (11.0%) compared with the whole of New Zealand (at 6.5% and 6.6% respectively).
  • 25,251 people in Waitakere City identified themselves as being of Maori Descent.
  • 67.5% of Waitakere's Residents were born in New Zealand as compared to 75.1% in 1991.

  • The most common language after English in Waitakere City is Samoan, spoken by 5.7% of people.  For New Zealand as a whole, the most common language after English is Mäori (4.5%).
  • 75.6% of the population in Waitakere City (120,036) speak only one language, compared with 82.1% for New Zealand as a whole.
  • 18.3% of the people in Waitakere City (29,121) speak two languages; 3.6% (5,664) speak three or more languages.
  • 19.2% of Mäori people in Waitakere City (4,050) speak two languages; 2.0% (420) speak three or more languages. 
  • The number of Waitakere's residents speaking Maori only has decreased over the last five years from 375 in 1996 to 183 in 2001.

  • 28.9% of people aged 15 years and over (31,242) in Waitakere City said they have a tertiary qualification, compared with 32.2% for New Zealand as a whole.
  • 26.6% of people aged 15 years and over (28,716) in Waitakere City said they have no formal qualifications, compared with 27.6% of people aged 15 years and over in New Zealand.
  • 20.9% of Mäori people aged 15 years and over (2,385) living in Waitakere City said they have a tertiary qualification and 40.1% of Mäori people aged 15 years and over (4,587) in Waitakere City said they have no formal qualifications.

  • The unemployment rate in Waitakere City is 8.3% (6,945), compared with 7.5% for all of New Zealand.
  • 18% of Waitakere's workforce works less than 30 hours per week.  35% work from 40-44 hours per week.  8% of the workforce work 60 hours or more per week!
  • The most popular occupational group in Waitakere City is clerks.
  • The unemployment rate of Mäori in Waitakere City is 15.2%, compared with 16.8% for all Mäori in New Zealand.
  • The industries with the largest amounts of workers are; Manufacturing (12,204) and Retail Trade (9,762).
  • The percentage of people using a private vehicle to travel to work is  74% and the percentage of people using public transport (i.e. bus or train) is 5%.   Waitakere City has 2,451 people who walk, jog, or bike to work!  In 2001 six percent of Waitakere's working population worked from home.
