Age (results from 2001 Census)
Waitakere City is a young city with 39% of its population under the age of 24. One third of Waitakere’s population is under 20 years of age. The percentage of under five years is slightly less than previous years at 8.4%. The age group occupying the highest percentage of Waitakere City is
30-34 years – not surprising since the average (mean) age is 32.8 (increase from 1996 at 31.9). Waitakere has a growing population of people over the age of 65 with 8.8% (14,826) in 2001 from 7.5% (10,329) in 1991.
- The median age of Maori people in Waitakere City is
21.1 years
- 2.1% of Maori people in Waitakere City are aged 65 and over, and 38.7% of Maori are aged under 15.

- 71.9% of people (114,867) in Waitakere City said they belong to the European ethnic group.
For all New Zealand 80.1% said they belong to the European ethnic group.
- 13.4% of people (21,390) in Waitakere City said they belong to the Mäori ethnic group compared with all of New Zealand at
14.7%
- The population of Waitakere City contains a larger proportion of Pacific peoples (14.5%) and larger proportion of Asian people (11.0%) compared with the whole of New Zealand (at 6.5% and 6.6% respectively).
