On 25 July 2007 around 30 enthusiastic and hardy Council staff celebrated the
first birthday of the new Civic Centre by joining forces with Project Twin
Streams Opanuku Stream to begin restoring their newly adopted area on the
Opanuku Streamside.
Just a few minutes walk away, through the Opanuku Reserve, and once choked
with rubbish, Privet and other environmental weeds, staff planted an astonishing
1,238 beautiful native plants on the site.
Other such days are planned, to plant, weed, mulch and generally take care of
the site, and eventually joining up with other areas adopted by community groups
doing restoration work along all of the lower Opanuku Stream. See you there!
The Project Twin Streams walk and cycleways were launched with a celebration
festival in June 2006. The day included art activities, cycling demonstrations,
fitness trials and display on sustainable technologies such as permeable paving.
