Education Kit Resources

Teacher education kits have been developed in a collaborative project between Waitakere City Council and teachers in Waitakere City secondary schools.  The resources are for use by secondary school teachers and students and primary school teachers.  The aim if for students to learn using local information - historical, environmental, economic and social about Waitakere City and develop an understanding of the key issues and trends it faces.

Resources have been gathered from many sources including Waitakere City Libraries local history collection and the J.T. Diamond Photographic Collection, Council records, the State of the City report - Waitakere City, Auckland Regional Council, census data, Western Leader and the New Zealand Herald news articles and community groups.

The resources are to be used as links to the curriculum and are divided into four sections:

Urban Studies Natural Environment Local Area Studies Special Places

Natural Environment

Many of the publications provided can be cross-referenced to all topics.  In addition to these publications, there are several resources which have been separately collated.

Community Study
All levels can do aspects of Community Study from analysis of particular areas to food chains associated with native plantings.  Resources available in Waitakere fall into three categories: bush lands, stream communities and estuarine flats.

Water Use
EcoWater and Waicare have water use, water disposal and storm water as a single packet.  There are some good resources available here as well as a number of experimental projects that are easily visited.  Resources available include: water management, water disposal and storm water (water run off).

Waste Management
The principal business involved with waste management is located at the Refuse Baling Station on The Concourse, Henderson.  This mainly research project area involves: waste and refuse collection, recycling and plastics and eco-buildings.
