We are the silvery dudes you find in the swamps and rivers close to the sea where we like swimming in slow-flowing water. At night we go looking for our food - insects and tiny crabs - that live in the top layers of the water. We can eat lots of things - we even tried the cheese one human gave us.
There are lots of us and we can be found in different parts of the river, even where it is salty. We live until we are two and we grow as long as the palm of an adult's hand. When our young return from the sea in spring, humans try to catch us in big nets in the river mouth. They call us whitebait.
