Native Freshwater Fish

Common bully - Gobiomorphus cotidianusFish surveys of the Auckland region show that over one third of the population of eels, banded kokopu and common bullies live in Waitakere streams.

Most native fish are nocturnal, solitary and secretive and so are difficult to see. The Waitakere Ranges and upper stream regions are a good habitat, as the streams are cool and provide an abundant supply of food and oxygen. The majority of these fish complete their life cycle in the ocean, so river and estuary conditions are important too.

The fish below are found in Waitakere streams:

Common Bully
Crans Bully
Giant Bully
Redfin Bully
