What is a greenprint?
Greenprint structure

What is the Greenprint?

The Greenprint is the guiding document for Waitakere City Council‘s eco city vision.

It is Waitakere City’s local Agenda 21

Waitakere City Council prepared the Greenprint in the early 1990s, and will review it during 2002 with the aim of producing “Greenprint +10”, the plan for the next 10 years.

How is the Greenprint Structured?

The Greenprint provides a framework for integrated decision making. It is structured around seven key focus areas:

Community Empowerment

To provide political leadership and vision and to strengthen the ability of communities to improve their social, environmental, and economic wellbeing.

Urban Consolidation

To encourage the creation of a more sustainable city by accommodating future population growth inside the current urban area - especially around commercial centres, transport nodes, and transport corridors.

A Strategy of Involvement

To enhance links between people and their environment, involve people, particularly mana whenua, in protecting and restoring their environment. Bring nature, history and heritage into everyday life.

A Holistic Approach to Health and Safety

To promote a holistic view of health and safety, recognising the links between natural, social, and economic environments and their impact on health and safety.

Traffic Reduction and Community Mobility

To plan for a city where the need to travel is reduced and where public transport, cycling and walking are encouraged.

A Life-cycle Approach to Energy, Resources and Waste

To assist individuals and business to adopt a holistic approach to resource use which results in using less energy, generating energy from renewable resources, using resources more wisely and producing less waste.

Greater Economic Independence

To facilitate economic development by targeting and attracting economic activity, which builds on Waitakere's strengths and contributes to its vision, while working with the existing business base to encourage more sustainable practices.
