Greening the Screen

An environmental initiative with the Screen Production Industry

Environmental Toolkit
South Pacific Pictures

Environmental Toolkit

Greening the Screen is a practical environmental toolkit for the New Zealand screen production industry. It provides tools for everyone working in the New Zealand screen industry to contribute to 'greener' film and TV productions.

It is designed so that a production can take out of it what is relevant and/or important to them, rather than being a strict set of guidelines. It includes sections for in the office, make-up, wardrobe, art, lighting, sound and camera, post-production, on-location unit, vehicles, catering, special effects, wrap, on-screen techniques and management issues.

The toolkit was developed by Waitakere City Council, Landcare Research, South Pacific Pictures, the Ministry for the Environment and the Screen Development and Production Association.

The toolkit is available on-line at www.greeningthescreen.co.nz, or Contact Us for a printed copy.

For more information on the toolkit read the Greening the Screen brochure below.

As well as producing the long-running Shortland Street some of South Pacific Pictures other productions include Whale Rider, Outrageous Fortune, Mercy Peak and NZ Idol. South Pacific Pictures, who are based in Henderson played an integral part in the development of the Greening the Screen Guidelines and piloted an environmental programme in 2005.

As part of the environmental programme at South Pacific Pictures some of the initiatives that were implemented included;

  • Installation of a worm farm to take organic (food scraps) waste from their studios
  • Double-sided printing of scripts to reduce paper consumption
  • Writing an Environmental Policy
  • Providing every staff member an environmental staff pack including a reusable mug (to reduce the use of disposable cups), a personal ashtray and a reusable cloth bag
  • Improving recycling stations around the studios – waste audits before and after showed a reduction of 76% of recyclables being sent to landfill!
