Walking and Cycling
Walking and cycling have many environmental and health benefits. They are also
compatible with higher density, mixed-use living environments as they allow people to make shorter trips
more easily. The presence of cyclists and pedestrians also increases surveillance and safety in an area.
Walking is an important part of the "mix" and make up nearly 10% of
all trips in the Auckland region. A further 34% of trips involve walking as a significant component. An additional 1.6% of all household trips (39,000
daily) are made by cyclists.
Strategy
Walking and cycling will be a safer and more enjoyable pastime thanks to the Council's adoption of a new Walking and Cycling Strategy.
Public consultation undertaken during the development of the strategy showed that safety, maintenance, and lack of cycle paths were the key issues to be addressed.
The new strategy includes funding over the coming years to provide a safe network of walking and cycling tracks and for maintenance of existing and new facilities.
Educational programmes aimed at all road users are also proposed to make pedestrians, cyclists and car drivers more aware of each other.
One of the key projects identified in the strategy is a walk and cycleway along the rail corridor to provide better access to the City's town centres and rail stations. This is likely to occur with the double tracking of the western
railway line over the next few years.

Updated Walk and Cycle Way Network
Plans to begin extending a network of walk and cycle ways in Waitakere City are moving ahead.
Work on upgrading the Henderson, Glen Eden, Fruitvale and Sunnyvale rail
stations and the project to double track the western line, are providing an
opportunity to develop a secure walk and cycle way along the rail line.
Rail trails " walk and cycle ways adjacent to rail lines " have worked well in
other parts of New Zealand and overseas.
The benefits of these walk and cycle ways include:
- Providing another way to travel to work or school
- Making it easier to get to parks, community centres, libraries and
shopping areas
- Less time to get across the city by avoiding busy roads
- Safer routes free of traffic
- Connections to other off-road walk and cycle tracks
